Sutherland Shire is in the state of New South Wales, Australia, and located about 35km south of Sydney.

Communication between Chuo City and Sutherland Shire started in 1989 through an introduction by the Japanese embassy in Australia when we held an exchange/home-stay program for junior high school students.

Both cities have been enhancing understanding of each other’s history and culture, and have been establishing friendship through various exchange events since the establishment of a sister city relationship in 1991.

To promote friendly relations with our sister city, Sutherland Shire, CCIEA exchanges photos of scenery and events, and hosts the  “Photo Exhibition for Friendly Relations with Sister City” every year.

Captain Cook made Sutherland the birthplace of Australia after returning to London and submitting a sailing report. Sutherland shows appreciation by having his portrait as its emblem, and praises his deeds by naming a bridge, high school, major road, hall, park, and other places and landmarks after him.

It is almost at the same latitude as Matsuyama, and has a comfortable climate. There is almost no temperature difference between summer and winter, while there is a big difference within a single day. The amount of rainfall is slightly lower than Tokyo.
Industries Local industries are petrochemical, iron products, automobile, furniture, and wood products. Oyster farming has been successful in Botany Bay and the Jones River. Also, tourism plays an important role in the Shire’s economy.

In 1770, James Cook (Captain Cook) anchored his ship at Kurnell (currently, Botany Bay) when he found Australia.

Sutherland is the birthplace of Australia, and it was named after one of his crewmen, Forby Sutherland, who died and was buried in this land.

It has a beautiful shoreline with a view of the Pacific to the east and bush lands to the west and south, and there are two national parks in this terrain surrounded by waters and greens.
